Kites

In my journeys to find ideas and activities to keep the children busy and focused on the chosen themes. I found many resources that had fun ideas and activities from some wonderful people who are very dedicated to their chosen profession. This has made it so much easier to plan a themed program! I cannot take credit for any of the ideas contained on my pages; they are the result of many other's combined years in the early childhood profession.

*Give each child a kite shape that has been cut out of construction
paper and folded in half lengthwise. Let the children unfold their
shapes and use eye droppers to squeeze drops of tempera paint on one
side fo their papers. Then have them refold their shapes and rub their
hands gently across the tops. Let them open up their kite shapes to
reveal the designs they have made. Tape pieces of yarn to the shapes
for kite strings. Attach the kite shapes to blue butcher paper that has
been hung on a wall or a bulletin board. If desired, fluff out several
cotton balls and glue them on the butcher paper for clouds.
Construction paper bird shapes can also be added to complete the mural.

*Kite Friends
One little kite in the sky so blue.
Along came another, then there were two.
Two little kites flying high above me.
Along came another, then there were three.
Three little kites, just watch how they soar.
Along came another, then there were four.
Four little kites, so high and so alive.
Along came another, then there were five.
Five little kites dancing 'cross the sky.
What a sight to see, way up so high!
-Jean Warren

You can do the above poem on a flannel board.

*Cut a kite shape and 5 bow-tie shapes out of 5 different colors of
felt and attach a yarn tail to each kite shape. Place the kite shapes
on a flannelboard and put the bow shapes in a pile nearby. Have the
children identify the colors of the bows and place them on the tails of
the matching colored kites. For an extra challenge, number the bows 1-5
and have them attach them to the kite in order.

*Kite Puzzles: Cut several kite shapes out of wallpaper samples.
Laminate or cover with clear contact paper. Cut the kites in half the
long way and mix up. The children can take turns putting the kites
back together.

*Have the children pair up. In each pair have one child pretend to be
the kite and the other child pretend to be the kite flyer. Have the
kite flyers reel out their kites and move them up and down and back and
forth. Then have them reel in their kies and trade places with their
partners.

*My Kite (The Farmer in the Dell)
My kite is up so high,
My kite is up so high.
Oh my, just watch it fly,
My kite is up so high.

My kite is falling down,
My kite is falling down.
Oh no, it's down so low,
My kite is falling down.

The wind has caught my kite,
The wind has caught my kite.
What fun, I'm on the run,
The wind has caught my kite.

My kite is up so high,
My kite is up so high.
Oh my, just watch it fly,
My kite is up so high.
-Jean Warren

*I Like Kites (3 Blind Mice)
I like kites, I like kites.
They fly high, they fly high.
They keep on spinning round and round,
Sometimes they even touch the ground,
They fly through the air without a sound.
Oh, I like kites!
-Lind Osmun

*Kite Sandwiches: Give the children bread and cheese slices that have
been cut into kite shapes. Let them put their slices together to make
kite sandwiches.
